Retired Anglican Reverend James Awany has encouraged final-year students of Dr Obote College in Lira City East Division to remain close to God as they prepare for the forthcoming Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) exams.
Rev. Awany assured them that putting God first is a decision they will never regret.
The former Lira district service commission chairperson delivered this message on Saturday, February 27, 2025, during a dedication and thanksgiving prayer service for UCE and UACE candidates of Dr Obote College, Boroboro. The service was held at the school.
Addressing the candidates, he urged them to “put on the helmet of faith and discipline” to excel in their final exams and reminded the students that the same God who helped them avoid dropping out of school would guide them to success.
Awany was accompanied by Rev. Canon James Okaka, who represented the Bishop of Lango Diocese, Professor Dr Alfred Olwa, and Rev. Jonathan Olap.
Currently seeking the mayoral seat for Lira City East Division, Rev. Awany further advised the candidates to cast all their fears and concerns about health onto God, describing Him as a caring Father.
He encouraged the students to work hard, behave well, and trust the Lord for success. He emphasised that the students represent the future of the nation and the Church, and their hard work will enable them to become responsible leaders who contribute to a better society.
According to the headteacher, Rev. Dick Alengo, Dr Obote College Boroboro has registered a total of 199 UCE candidates and 145 UACE candidates for the 2025 exams.
Rev. Alengo appreciated the parents for their wonderful work in paying school fees on time, appealing to the candidates to put into practice what they have learned over the last four years.
The headteacher assured parents that, based on the efforts of the teachers, the school is ready to produce good results in both O and A-Levels. He also urged candidates to maintain discipline as the exams are expected to commence next month.
On behalf of the students, Naume Ayugi Rebecca, a Senior Six science candidate, expressed gratitude. She appreciated the teachers for their “wonderful comprehensive great work” and promised the parents that the candidates are ready to challenge the 2025 UNEB exams without any fear.
“Enough is enough; through the experience that teachers have given to us, we are ready,” she said.
Another candidate, Gerald Odongo, shared his confidence, stating that the knowledge and experience gained at Dr Obote College have fully prepared him to pursue careers in law and journalism.
“I can be empty but I have more knowledge right now. We shall challenge UNEB and the world will know that Dr Drbote College is the best learning environment in this country,” Odongo declared.
This dedication service comes as a significant milestone in the national academic calendar. Last week, the Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) released the 2025 timetable.

According to UNEB Executive Director Dan Odongo, the examinations will begin with the briefing of UCE candidates on October 10, 2025, followed by PLE on October 31, and UACE on November 7.
UNEB revealed a 7.5% increase in registered candidates for 2025, with the total number rising from 1,308,998 in 2024 to 1,416,468 this year. The breakdown includes 818,010 PLE candidates, 432,025 UCE candidates, and 166,433 UACE candidates.
Dr Obote College has a total of 1,150 learners in both O and A-Levels, supported by over 65 teachers.
