Gyökeres on fire as Leeds suffer loss at Arsenal

Arsenal

Arsenal have started their 2025/26 Premier League season in fine form – winning two matches in a row.

Their first win came on August 17 at Old Trafford with Ricardo Calafiori scoring the only goal in the 13th minute. That win hit Manchester United fans hard, although some of them – including club legends like Rio Ferdinand, praised how reformed Manchester United are this season.

Meanwhile, Arsenal’s major agenda going to that fixture was “to win” and they did that. The win has extended Mikel Arteta’s super record in terms of results against the “big 6 teams” in the league.

Back to Saturday against Leeds, much focus was on new No.9, Viktor Gyökeres, bought from Sporting CP in Portugal. Against Manchester United who also wanted his services but was beaten by Arsenal, Gyökeres registered no shot on target.

Known for his prolific performances in Portugal and what he’s come with to the Premier League, Arsenal and her fans had little or no doubt he would strive sooner.

This belief came true against newly promoted Leeds who suffered a 5:0 loss. Goals from Jurrien Timber (2), Bukayo Saka and Gyökeres (2) pushed Arsenal top of the league.

On 6 points and 6GD, Arsenal will face reigning champions Liverpool on Sunday August 31 at Andfield.

Captain Martin Odeegard and Saka are key doubts for that fixture through injuries against Leeds although no official confirmation has been released on how long each will be sidelined.

Speaking to the press post-Leeds, manager Mikel Arteta said Saka’s injury “looks significant” – adding that he was yet to hear from the Doctors.

With fully fit Noni Madueke, Gabriel Martinelli, youngster Mark Dowman and Nathan Nwaneri, Arsenal will head to Liverpool with much confidence of getting three points.
