George Abdul, Otuke’s former Resident District Commissioner (RDC), has declared that senior presidential advisor for Lango Sam Engola should not be re-elected as the National Resistance Movement (NRM) flag bearer for Erute South constituency in the upcoming primary and parliamentary elections.
Abdul made the appeal while speaking to NRM leaders from Amac town council at the Amach Central SDA Church headquarters on Tuesday, July 1, 2025.
“Now is the right time for the new young generation to concentrate on politics,” Abdul asserted. He argued that Engola’s political viability is diminished, stating: “If Sam Engola was the best and stable candidate for Erute South, the NRM would not have lost the elections in 2016 and 2021.
“Odur Jonathan capitalized on Engola’s weaknesses to take power. I want to make it very clear: at this moment, Engola Sam has no weight in politics.”

He added: “Erute South needs vibrant NRM candidates who can challenge parties like UPC. Therefore, the only person who can remove Odur Jonathan from Erute South is George Abdul.”
He revealed his resignation as RDC, claiming, “I resigned because I know I am the only godfather who can save the people of Erute South from the opposition.”
He further criticized Engola’s multiple political roles: “There is a time for everything. Why does Engola want to be everywhere? He is a presidential advisor, wants to be NRM district chairperson, wants to be Erute South MP, and again wants to be Regional NRM Vice Chairperson for Northern Uganda. Don’t we have other people who can also fill those positions?”
The former RDC expressed confidence in challenging the opposition: “I’m here to challenge the opposition in the upcoming general election. In the past, NRM lacked quality candidates to challenge Odur.”
“I want to refute the allegation that pressure from me is causing people to spread propaganda claiming I’ve been appointed ambassador. People are now fearing me.”
Amac town council NRM chairperson, Gongson Otidi, echoed the call for change during the meeting: “The reason Erute South cannot develop like others is because we keep sending opposition to Parliament. We don’t hate speaking, but we want a leader who can transform the lives of his voters.”
He urged support for Abdul in the primaries, saying: “I encourage all NRM leaders and members to vote for George Abudul in the primary election.
“For over 10 years, we have missed out on significant developmental progress, both from the government and the MP. Let’s back Abudul to hold the NRM flag and bring new leadership to the parliamentary seat.”
Over 120 NRM leaders from Amac town council endorsed Abdul as the right candidate for Erute South. They collectively declared it time for Engola Sam to “rest from politics.”
