The Ministry of Works and Transport has ordered an emergency inspection of more than 50 buses belonging to YY Coach Company following two deadly road crashes within one week.
On May 5, 2025, a YY bus with number plate UAY 701C overturned and burst into flames at Najja, Buikwe district. Dozens were left lifeless and scores injured.
Again, on May 11, another bus UAX 852F crashed at Ayago, Pakwach-Arua highway.
Fred Byamukama, State Minister for Transport in the Ministry of Works and Transport, on Tuesday announced full fleet audit and mechanical fitness checks in Kampala.
Minister Byamukama also announced the government decision to stop road operations for fifteen (15) days following a series of serious accidents (road crashes) linked to reckless driving.
According to him, buses’ operations “may resume after a full review.” The Ministry of Work and Transport and Uganda Police’s Directorate of Traffic are expected to inspect over 60 buses belonging to YY Company.
The Minister acknowledged complaints linking road deterioration to corruption at weight bridges, providing evidence that some staff extorted money from truck drivers to permit them to carry excess loads, thereby contributing to road damage and potholes.
Speaking to Reporters in Lira City on Tuesday, Juma Abdul Omar YY bus Lira terminal manager confirmed being slapped with a travel ban. He said all buses were being transported to Kampala for inspection and audits.

He appealed to all customers that their services will continue to operate normally with taxi and cargo trucks on the road.
YY coaches have been operating extensively across Uganda, with buses running from Kampala to Arua, Lira, Gulu, Yumbe, Soroti; Mable, and Koboko, among other locations.
The company was established over 15 years ago.
“One life lost is one too many. We’re ending this negligence era,” Minister Byamukama told the press in Kampala on Tuesday.
