Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF) is conducting a countrywide Aquaculture Census.

The census aims at ascertaining the number of fish ponds, farms and labour involved.

Emmanuel Omara Pacoto, the District Fishery Officer for Gulu, stated that the enumerators will be guided by extension workers who are already familiar with the locations of fish farmers.

Pacoto stated that the exercise will start in Gulu this week or early next week.

“The Aquaculture Census will focus on the household-based farms and non-household-based farms,” he said.

“We are going to look at aquaculture farm characteristics, which includes production methods, production facilities, like fish meal plants, and the grow-out facilities, the farm labor.

He said the farm labor census will reveal whether it employs domestic or hired labor, as well as whether it was established for domestic or commercial purposes.

According to Omara, Gulu had 200 fish ponds under its jurisdiction before the City was established.

In collaboration with the Ministry of Gender, Labour, and Social Development, UBOS will also conduct a labour market survey.

According to Nancy Anyango, UBOS’ senior PRO, the enumerators will interact with Human Resources Officers in each of the companies and organizations.

“All this information will be treated with the highest level of confidentiality it requires,” she stated.
