As the 2026 general elections approach, many people have begun to prepare to run for seats that are currently occupied, including positions held by powerful politicians.
In Ajuri County, Alebtong district, MP Denis Hamson Obua’s position is under threat as a young NRM strong mobiliser, Steven Omara Anyeko, expresses interest and determination to end Obua’s 15-year political tenure.
Since its inception, Denis Hamson Obua, the former state minister of education in charge of sports and current Government Chief Whip, has been the only elected and re-elected representative of the constituency in parliament.
Despite being represented by a strong and powerful personality, voters have complained about poor road networks, declining education and health standards, and generally poor service delivery.
Omara Anyeko, a social worker from Abukamola parish in Omoro sub-county, East of Ajuri County, comes from a humble family. He has bachelor’s degrees in procurement and logistics, as well as a master’s degree in international relations and diplomatic studies.
Anyeko is currently engaged in serious mobilization across several villages in the sub-counties of the Ajuri constituency. According to sources, he is receiving widespread support, with many people describing him as a blessing to the community.
Anyeko has pledged to honestly represent the people’s voice in parliament.
Omara is still the only person who has spoken up, expressing interest in running against Obua in the National Resistance Movement party primary elections, which are expected to be the most difficult of all, given Obua’s position in the ruling government.
Omara, who is very influential in grassroots mobilization, believes that a ‘big win’ will come his way, and that he will triumphantly hold the NRM flag and defeat any other candidates who will run in the general election.
“I have done exclusive consultations with NRM members in Ajuri and so far received much support, the reason I believe I am so far the best candidate who can transform Ajuri county,” Anyeko noted in a recent interview with the journalist in Lira City.
He revealed his intention to collaborate with various stakeholders to improve the education and health sectors, as well as road infrastructure development.
Omara has initiated several projects for the Ajuri County community as he continues to consult with NRM members and the general public.
In the education sector, he donated desks and books to some schools using resources obtained through his networks of friends and well-wishers.
He has also provided farmers with agricultural inputs such as seedlings and training to help them walk the path to financial independence through farming.
