At least three politicians in Lamwo district have declared their intention to run for the position of National Resistance Movement (NRM) party chairperson in the district, paving the way for a competitive race.
The incumbent, Okeny Mark, has officially announced his bid for re-election with the slogan “For Equity in Service Delivery.”
Okeny, a former district councillor, has held several key positions, including secretary for health, education, and community-based services.
He also worked as secretary for works and technical services prior to the formation of Lamwo district from Kitgum 15 years ago.
Okeny is also a board member at Madi Kiloc Primary School in Padibe West sub-county, Lamwo district.
Other politicians interested in running for the district NRM chairperson position include Atii Florence, a female councilor representing workers in Lamwo district, and Odoch Polycarp, the LC3 chairperson for Padibe East sub-county.
The criteria for electing a district NRM chairperson in Uganda are guided by the National Resistance Movement (NRM) constitution and the party’s electoral guidelines issued by its electoral commission.
Interested candidates complete and submit nomination forms within the time frame specified, and the NRM vetting committee screens all candidates for eligibility and compliance before approving candidates for district campaigns in accordance with NRM campaign guidelines.
The voting is conducted by NRM delegates at the district level (which may include party structures such as village, parish, and sub-county executive committees) before the district electoral officer announces the results and the winner is named district NRM chairperson.
