According to Kiira region police PRO SP James Mubi, workers of Kakira sugarcane wielding machetes turned a labor strike into a chaotic riot, destroying property and endangering public safety.
Water tanks, motorcycles, bicycles, savings boxes, tables, and crops were all vandalized.
The situation quickly deteriorated, prompting SSP Charles Nsaba, the Regional Police Commander (RPC) for the Kiira region, to send in a fully equipped crowd control unit.
Within minutes, the affected areas of Kakira town council in Jinja district were restored to order.
“The suspects face multiple charges including malicious damage to property, assault, and taking part in an unlawful demonstration,” said SP Mubi.
He added that more arrests are likely as investigations continue.
Authorities have since launched a peaceful conflict resolution process involving all relevant stakeholders in order to address the workers’ grievances and prevent future unrest.
The incident highlights the growing conflict between sugarcane workers and factory management over outstanding labor issues.
