How Amugo Agro tech., institute students are holding officers accountable.

Amugo Agro

On April 1, the angry students of Amugo Agro Technical Institute in Alebtong district took the issues affecting them seriously.

In an effort to find solutions and restore sanity to the institute following cases of abuse of office and misappropriation of funds, among other things, students ensured that acting deputy principal Okite Richard and bursar Lucy Apio were arrested.

Howard Onyok, chairman of the board of governors, escaped and presented himself at the Amugo police outpost. He would eventually be released on police bond.

Their arrests come after chairman Howard Onyok, Okite Richard, and the bursar failed to attend and issue accountability at a critical meeting on March 26, 2025.

Jimmy Okello, Assistant Resident District Commissioner of Alebtong, stated that the purpose of the meeting was to address the various allegations.

One of the student leaders expressed dissatisfaction that chairman Onyok not only missed the meeting but also made public remarks during a radio interview.

The remarks were viewed as “dismissive or unresponsive to the students’ concerns,” he said.

In recent days, tensions between students, the acting deputy principal and bursar, as well as the board chairman, have risen dramatically.

On March 21, student leaders wrote a letter to Alebtong’s Chief Administrative Officer, expressing dissatisfaction with the institute’s management.

A meeting was later held, but the accused officials were not present. This fueled more rage.

After being absent, Onyok requested an emergency meeting on April 1, 2025. Before the meeting could begin, students insisted that he first make a statement to the police about the accusations.

When they tried to arrest him and transport him to the Amugo police station, he escaped and reported to police.

Onyok was then placed under protective custody, but he was later released to return and restore order.

A meeting of board members, student leaders, and teachers was scheduled for the morning of April 2, 2025, in the Alebtong district chamber.
