Why have angry Amolatar villagers initiated road repairs?

Amolatar | On March 3, 2025, residents of Arwotokun village in Aromi parish, Akwon sub-county, Amolatar, took matters into their own hands and began repairing a 10 kilometer district road that connects them to Abalodyang trading center and Amolatar town council.

Frustrated by ongoing neglect, Eyangu Bangwelo, chairperson of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) in Akwon sub-county, publicly criticized the district administration for failing to improve the road’s deteriorating condition.

Despite the allocation of funds by the NRM government, Bangwelo stated that critical areas, particularly the Ojok-okwir swamp in Arwotokun, have been left in disarray.

He, however, praised the efforts by Kyoga North MP Olobo Dubai, who had previously worked to improve road conditions.

Bamgwelo emphasized the district’s urgent need to prioritize the swamp area in order to prevent the community from becoming further isolated.

Sadam Owiny, a councilor representing Akwon sub-county, echoed Bangwelo’s sentiments, emphasizing that the poor state of the road has disproportionately affected women and children.

He noted that the road’s condition has made it inaccessible to emergency services such as ambulances, exacerbating community safety concerns.

Local Council One representative, Okwir Alex, expressed the community’s willingness to work with the district.

He stated that if funds were required to repair the swamp, residents were willing to contribute in order to restore critical access routes.

Denish Engwedo, a concerned resident, lamented the district’s apparent disregard for their infrastructure needs.

He urged well-wishers and other stakeholders to step in and help improve road conditions, emphasizing a collective desire for support that goes beyond local government.

As the community works together to repair what has long been neglected, their determination demonstrates the importance of local leaders being accountable and taking action.

The Arwotokun villagers are demanding immediate attention to their plight, hoping that their voices will finally be heard after years of unfulfilled promises.

By press time, the district leadership could not be available for a comment.
