What locals say as police disrupt UPC rally in Alebtong

UPC

Sunday, February 23, marks the second day of UPC mobilisation rallies in Lango East ahead of the 2026 general elections.

On Saturday, a massive crowd of Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) supporters and apparent ardent supporters of party President Jimmy James Michael Akena overwhelmed police officers.

This came after a last-minute change of venue from Alanyi Primary School to Abako sub-county headquarters.

Akena, who is also the Lira City East MP, had planned to address his supporters at Alanyi Primary School, but a sudden directive forced his team to change locations.

The change, reportedly influenced by local authorities citing security concerns, did not deter his supporters, who showed up in large numbers, chanting party slogans and demanding to speak with their leader, Akena.

The unexpected turn of events put police officers stationed at the original location on high alert, leaving them helpless as they watched hundreds of happy people accompany their very own son of the soil to the Abako sub-county offices.

However, the sheer size of the crowd overwhelmed security personnel, who struggled to keep order as eager supporters rushed forward to see the Congress leader.

Akena spoke at the rally, emphasizing the importance of strong leadership, grassroots mobilization, and party unity.

He assured his supporters that he is committed to improving citizens’ well-being and championing their concerns at the national level.

“This gathering is a testament to the power of the people. No amount of barriers can stop us from mobilizing and engaging with our supporters,” Akena said to loud cheers.

Residents expressed their enthusiasm about Akena’s visit, with many highlighting their trust in his leadership and vision for the sub-region. Some supporters condemned what they termed as attempts to suppress political mobilization in the area.

Here are quotes from two different locals who stood firm despite the police deployment:

Vincent Okello, a local resident, said that no amount of police presence would stop him from welcoming his leader.

“I have the right to gather and show my support without fear. Akena is my choice, and I am here to stand with him,” he added

Another community elder who spoke to tndNews identified as Phillipo Ogwang, noted that Uganda is his country and Abako his home. He said no intimidation by security would shake him.

“I am expressing my freedom and rights. I have come in peace, and nothing will drive me away. Our voices cannot be silenced because leadership belongs to the people,” Ogwang emphasized.

To avoid any incidents, police stood back and watched the crowd disperse peacefully as the event came to an end.

Despite initial tensions, the rally concluded peacefully, marking yet another bold step in Akena’s ongoing political engagements in northern Uganda.

Akena and his team are in Otuke district today.
