Kole North MP Dr Opio Acuti gets shs60m for small bridges

The Ministry of Works and Transport has provided construction materials valued at shs60 million to Kole North constituency.

These materials were lobbied by Dr. Samuel Opio Acuti, the Member of Parliament for Kole North. At least 140 small bridges across the constituency will be worked on.

In an interview with tndNews on Sunday, MP Dr. Samuel Opio Acuti stated that he has received 40 large culverts and 100 gabion boxes.

According to the MP, the large culverts have diameters of 2100mm (2.1m) and 2500mm (2.5m) and are intended for use in three different swamps.

The swamps are Monyanyira Gedo swamp in Adellogo parish, Okwerodot sub-county; Adonyajili swamp in Apii Oguru parish; and Owiny Dap swamp in Ot Kwach parish, Alito sub-county.

He revealed that 100 gabion boxes will be utilized to construct stone walls aimed at mitigating the impact of stormwater.

Dr. Opio emphasized that these swamps are vital for connecting residents to primary schools, agricultural markets, and administrative centers.

Currently, these areas are isolated, and previous attempts to address the issue have been unsuccessful due to stormwater washing away the smaller 900mm culverts, which are inadequate for handling the substantial water flow.

Following a visit by the engineers from the Ministry, it was recommended that larger culverts be used, which are not readily available in the market.

“It is on this basis that I sought assistance from the Ministry to procure these larger culverts,” MP Opio added.

“We are optimistic about utilizing the 1 billion Ugandan Shillings allocated for road development in Kole District to facilitate the installation of these culverts,” concluded Opio Acuti.

During the President’s regional visit to Lango, the State Minister for Works and Transport, Musa Ecweru, acknowledged that MP Opio Acuti had approached him regarding concerns about certain swamp crossings that are excessively deep and large for the district to manage.

The Minister revealed that the issue prompted a call for intervention from the Ministry.

He noted that the Ministry is planning to assist districts with the provision of larger culverts and necessary equipment.
