Lira University donates land for the heart centre

Lira University has donated five acres of land to the Uganda Heart Institute (UHI) for the construction of a Lango regional heart centre.

Dr Peter Lwabi, the Uganda Heart Institute’s Deputy Executive Director, made the announcement on Wednesday at an event in Lira City.

Dr. Lwabi thanked the Minister of Health, Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng Ocero, for her unwavering commitment to improving healthcare services throughout Uganda.

He emphasised that the opening of the regional heart centre in Lira is part of a larger effort to decentralise specialised cardiac care.

Similar care is being provided at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital, Jinja Hospital, and now Lira Regional Referral Hospital, the fourth facility to benefit from this initiative.

Dr. Andrew Odur, Acting Director of Lira Regional Referral Hospital, also thanked the Uganda Heart Institute for its generous support. He emphasised the importance of such a facility in the Lango sub-region, citing the high rate of accidents and related cardiac complications.

Dr. Odur praised Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng Ocero for her work to advance healthcare development in Uganda.

Lawrence Engole, Lira’s Resident City Commissioner, praised the National Resistance Movement (NRM) government, led by President Yoweri Museveni, for putting Ugandans’ health and well-being first.

He noted that the regional heart centre would bring life-saving cardiac services closer to Lango residents. Engole also thanked Dr. Aceng for her pivotal role in propelling this developmental progress.

Once completed, the heart centre is expected to significantly reduce the burden of heart disease by providing easily accessible and specialised care.

Minister Dr. Aceng stated that similar facilities will be built at regional hospitals across the country.
