Okot Moses Junior Bitek, Kyoga County MP in Amolatar district, is willing to join the ruling party if certain conditions are met.
On January 28, 2025, the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) MP told President Museveni Yoweri what to do.
MP Okot was among the politicians and hundreds of others who accompanied Museveni on his PDM performance evaluation and wealth creation tour in the Lango sub-region.
Speaking as the area MP, Okot said the following.
“….quite often, it’s always predictable that a person of my standard in such a meeting would be controversial from initially (my looks alone). But, Your Excellency, I want to bring to your attention that I am the area Member of Parliament for this constituency, and it would be a very great omen for me as your host not to welcome you: So, may it please you that I welcome you in my constituency. You’re welcome.
“Your Excellency, all my messages that I intended to present to you have been presented by my two abled-colleagues – the district chair and chairperson NRM of the district. However, this is personal! I’m a member of the Forum for Democratic Change and I am the legal secretary of that party. My mother – biological – is your chairperson of the women’s league of this district – of NRM. The contrast is that, Your Excellency, the movement as a political party would have captured young, vibrant and brilliant men and recruited them but they have not been very good at their work.
“The leadership here, I ask you: if you have intelligence, they should be able to have recruited men of my person, men like the chair but they chase us. We are a product; I was born in your regime but there is nothing enticing.
“I am lame because I was shot while representing fishermen. I litigated with the government in court, judgement was given. Upto date, I have not been paid. But that is not what is prime!
“Prime to me Mr President, if you want me in the NRM, I have about three prayers to make: tarmack for me the road that goes from Namasale to Dokolo. You will receive me.
“Two, compensate the fishermen. Some of them got lame, some died. I am a living survivor, physical evidence that you needed for the brutality that was here. Compensate them, you will welcome me because my conscience would be clear that I am speaking for my people. And that is why they call me here Vox populi, Vox Dei – the voice of the people is the voice of God. Thank you very much.”
While President Museveni has never heeded demands that come with pressure and conditions, it is unclear whether MP Okot will change his mind this time because he can be a valuable human resource for the National Resistance Movement.
