Dr. Kizza Besigye, one of many civilians whose trials before the military court were declared “unconstitutional and must cease” by the Supreme Court, appeared in civilian court on Friday.
Besigye, who is currently remanded at Luzira Prison under “unconstitutional military court” orders, was brought to Buganda Road Chief Magistrate Court for a hearing.
Dr. Besigye and Samuel Lubega Mukaaku are charged after being arrested in downtown Kampala in 2022 while protesting Uganda’s high commodities prices.
On Tuesday, the opposition’s top figure informed the same court through the Prisons Service that he was ill and would be unable to attend.
His supporters, who had shown up in court on Friday, kept encouraging him to remain strong. “Doctor, you will not die,” they kept saying.
Early this week, Uganda Prisons Service spokesperson Frank Baine stated that Dr. Besigye was fine and did not require any special medical attention.
Baine’s statement has sparked outrage among Besigye supporters, who have seen how frailed he is currently.
Since 1986, the former FDC party president has been arrested more times than any other politician or civic activist in Uganda.
