MP Auma’s solar lights excite Amac town council residents

Lira | The installation of solar lights throughout the town has sparked excitement among residents of Amac town council in Lira district.

Linda Agnes Auma, the Woman Member of Parliament for the Lira District, generously donated these solar-powered lights to eliminate darkness and allow traders to conduct business at night.

The woman MP added that the lighting will improve overall security.

Auma intends to expand this project to encompass the entire district, with the goal of illuminating all trading centers and town councils.

On December 31, 2024, she began by installing six solar powered lights in Amac town as part of her commitment to fostering development in the area. The project, she said, is a personal initiative with no government involvement.

Lira district, like others, experiences frequent power outages, which has prompted Auma to provide an alternative. Her solution is regarded as a critical step forward in addressing both security concerns and developmental challenges caused by load shedding.

“I want the people of Lira district to compete with business individuals in various locations across the country, both during the day and at night,” she told tndNews.

Every trading center and town council, including Amac, Bar, Agweng, Aromo, Ogur; Agali, Adyaka, Ayami, and others, will have street lighting installed by Auma.

Tonny Ongom, secretary of the Amac town council Boda Boda Association, thanked Auma for enhancing the town council’s business environment.

He stated that the installation of solar lights has significantly improved their operations, which previously ended around 7 or 8 p.m. With these, they intend to extend their working hours to 9 or 10 p.m. daily.

Ongom emphasized Auma’s numerous contributions to the district.

Susan Ogwal, the chairperson who represents all small-scale vendors in Amach town, thanked her Member of Parliament for his nurturing role and dedication to the local community.

Traders, led by their chairperson, Julius Peter Okello Amac, discussed their challenges with night-time operations. He stated that the lack of lighting had hampered business growth and the town’s overall development.

Fred Okwee Abaryang, the LC3 chairperson of Amac town council, highlighted MP Auma’s contributions to the district, which included the rehabilitation of community roads and the donation of aluminum saucepans.

Okwee added that Auma has helped local churches and schools, as well as efforts to promote community unity.

He also stated that installing the lights would benefit local businesses by combating the use of counterfeit currency, reducing night-time theft, and improving overall security.

Sodrick Ogwang, the District Youth Chairperson of Lira district, expressed his gratitude and advised the youth of various trading centers and town councils where MP Auma has installed the lights to make the most of these improvements.

He encouraged them to start businesses like chapati making, grocery sales, and restaurants because the new lighting would make it safer.

“As the district youth leader, I take great pride in the commendable efforts of the honorable representative.”

Recently, she has been sponsoring students to various vocational training institutions, which has significantly helped to reduce unemployment. Many of the youth who received this training are now self-employed.

“Additionally, she has supported young individuals in agri-business by providing them with piglets and chickens, as well as assisting Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLA). This is the kind of leadership we aspire to see,” Ogwang added.

Daniel Atoo, managing director of Sprint Technical Works General Supplies, spoke to the media about the streetlight installation.

He stated that the lights provided by the Member of Parliament are known as “Golden Sun” and have a power output of over 60 watts, with a lifespan of more than seven years.
