Elections 2026: who can register as a voter?

The election commission (EC) released a roadmap for the 2026 general elections last year, with key activities beginning this year.

However, the focus is on 2026, when Uganda will elect a “new government” for another five years.

Since 1986, the East African country has only had Yoweri Kaguta Museveni as president.

President Museveni, who is currently 80 years old, has received overwhelming support from his NRM party for the presidential flag.

To allow Ugandans who have turned 18 to vote, as well as those who want to change their polling information, the EC has scheduled nationwide voter register updates.

Who qualifies?

• a citizen of Uganda

• 18 years of age or older

• originates from or resides in the parish or ward of registration

According to the EC, those in the above categories should register to vote at their nearest update center between January 20 and February 10, 2025.

From April 18 to May 8, 2025, the national voters’ register will be displayed at polling stations.

The elections shall take place from January 12 to February 9 for presidential, parliamentary and local government councils.
