UPDF says it shone at OSMA in Abuja

The second edition of the Africa military games ended on November 30 in Abuja, Nigeria.

The games, organized by the Organization for Military Sports in Africa (OSMA), took place from November 18 to November 30, 2014.

Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) in a December 1 statement, said its athletes delivered a remarkable performance, clinching a total of nine medals—four gold, four silver, and one bronze.

The closing ceremony at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium was attended by Kashim Shettima, Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, who represented President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Shettima praised the military athletes for using sport to promote African unity and friendship.

“The existing unity in diversity is a strength that, when leveraged, can drive Africa’s socioeconomic transformation and integration,” Shettima added.

The UPDF team delivered an outstanding performance, with Private Kugonza Joyce, Private Amoko Innocent, Private Namutebi Erina, and Private Ocan James winning gold medals in various boxing categories.

Silver medals were secured by Private Jopyem James, Private Jamidali Adam (boxing), Private Cheptoyek Ruth, and Private Chemutai Leonard (athletics).

Sergeant Chebet Emily earned a bronze medal, capping off a commendable performance for the Ugandan contingent.

The UPDF team was praised for their outstanding representation of Uganda, which boosted the country’s reputation on the continental stage.

This success comes as Uganda prepares to co-host the 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN) and the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
