Kampala | The United States (US) has announced additional financial assistance to Uganda in its efforts to respond to mpox.
According to the US Mission in Kampala, the US is providing $4.1 million, equivalent to shs15 billion, and 5,500 mpox tests to support the country’s mpox response efforts.
According to the Ministry of Health, Uganda had 51 cases by October 2, but by October 14, there were 80.
When the first mpox case was confirmed in Kasese district in July 2024, Uganda went on high alert.
Commenting on the funding support, US Ambassador to Uganda William Popp stated that the United States’ commitment to a healthy Uganda is the foundation of a prosperous Uganda.
“When people are healthy, they can work and provide for their family and contribute more fully to their communities. The U.S. government’s partnership with the Ugandan people focuses on sustainable long-term solutions, building people’s capacity to address these issues independently in the future,” Popp added.
The US stated that this new mpox prevention assistance is in addition to the hundreds of millions of dollars the United States provides each year to “build a strong and resilient health system” able to detect, prevent, and respond to a variety of health threats and illnesses, including mpox.
Humanitarian support
The United States announced nearly $14 million in new humanitarian assistance to refugees and host communities.
This brings total humanitarian funding to more than $83 million in 2024 alone.
