Katakwi | The Deputy Chief of Defence Forces, has emphasised the importance of soldiers understanding Uganda’s political landscape as well as the broader geopolitical environment.
Lt. Gen. Sam Okiding said “a soldier who does not understand the politics of their country or the world is a potential threat.”
He was speaking at the end of a week-long political and ideological orientation for artillery personnel completing the Level III Man Course at the School of Artillery and Air Defence in Olilim, Katakwi district.
Okiding emphasized the importance of increasing soldiers’ political awareness.
Further, he reminded the troops of their critical role in safeguarding Uganda’s sovereignty.
“Uganda is a beautiful country, admired by many. If you don’t protect it zealously, bad actors will destroy it,” he said.
The Deputy Chief of Defence Forces also urged soldiers to fight corruption, stating that it undermines public trust and must be eradicated at all costs.
This statement is consistent with Okiding’s boss, CDF Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugabe, who has issued many political statements in recent years.
With his sights set on politics, Gen. Muhoozi intends to succeed his 80-year-old father, Gen. Museveni Yoweri.
