Breaking: Dr. Okune’s coronation as next Won Nyaci of Lango, off

Lango

Kampala | The government of Uganda has called off the ongoing preparation to coronate Eng. Dr. Michael Odongo Okune as the next Won Nyaci (Paramount Chief) of Lango with immediate effect.

tndNews understands that the organising committee of the same has been advised, to wait.

Eng. Okune, whose election continues to be strongly contested by the outgoing Won Nyaci, Won Deo, Mzee Yosam Odur and as a section of clan chiefs loyal to the Lango Cultural Foundation, was scheduled to be coronated on November 2, 2024, in Lira City.

He and his close team met the disturbing news about the government position on Thursday, October 24, 2024, when he (Odongo) attempted to follow up on whether or not President Museveni would attend his planned ceremony.

As reported by NileTimes, Eng. Okune also met the Minister for Presidency, Milly Babirye Babalanda, on the same day, but she did not confirm President Museveni’s attendance.

NileTimes further reports that a source in government revealed that President Museveni, on the guidance of key government legal brains, intelligence, and other leaders from the region, directed that Okune’s coronation be put on hold until further notice.

“The president was briefed about how Okune was elected under a different entity, “Lango Cultural Institution-Tekwaro,” a parallel organization against the Lango Cultural Foundation headed by the legitimate Won Nyaci H.H. Odur.

President Museveni was also advised that the reigning Won Nyaci Odur, through the Institution of Lango Cultural Foundation, is the one mandated to organize the election of his successor.

The election of Eng. Odongo took place early this year and those loyal to him have seriously embarked on a mission to mobilise resourcess for his coronation.

MTN Uganda is one of their generous contributors, pulling out a sum of shs10m only for November 2 event which has been called off.

By press time, tndNews had yet to receive official communication from the Lango Cultural Institution.
