Sheikh Yakub Okwir Ali appointed acting Khadi ‘Lango district’

Lira | Sheikh Ssali Imran Abdnoor, Secretary for Religious Affairs at the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council, has urged the Muslim community in the Lango sub-region to come together and welcome the newly appointed Khadi.

Sheikh Yakub Okwir Ali succeeds the esteemed Sheikh Salim Ishaq Nangoye.

Sheikh Abdnoor was the main celebrant at the handover ceremony held in Lira City.

He praised the outgoing Khadi for his outstanding leadership over the previous twelve years.

Abdnoor also expressed gratitude for the peaceful transition and encouraged district leaders to work closely with the new Khadi. He also encouraged the people of Lango to support and cooperate with their new leaders.

On Friday, September 6, 2024, members of the Muslim community from various regions gathered at Lango Quran Primary School in Lira City to witness the handover ceremony for Lango District’s new Khadi.

Sheikh Ali thanked the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council for entrusting him with this leadership role in a post-appointment media statement.

He emphasised the importance of this appointment to the Lango community and his extensive experience as an Imam for over 23 years.

The new district Khadi promised to work closely with his predecessor, Sheikh Salim Ishaq Nangoye, for additional guidance.

Ishaq expressed gratitude to the Lango people for their unwavering support throughout his tenure. As he left the office, he thanked Uganda’s government, led by President Yoweri Museveni.

According to Asuman Owula, spokesperson for the Lango Muslim District Council, this is the first peaceful handover ceremony that the Lango people have experienced.

During a press briefing, Asuman Owula stated that the district council covers more than six districts, including Otuke, Alebtong, Lira, Dokolo, Amolatar, and Lira City.
