How Major Olir Charles, Alebtong’s OWC coordinator, died

Lira | North Kyoga Region Police released a road crash statement on Thursday, detailing how Rtd Maj Olir Charles died.

The deceased was the Alebtong district’s Operation Wealth Creation (OWC) coordinator.

SP Jimmy Patrick Okema, PRO of North Kyoga Region, said in a statement to the press that one person, Rtd Maj Olir Charles, died on arrival at Lira Regional Referral Hospital after being involved in a crash on August 28, 2024, at around 8:40 a.m. in Akia along the Lira-Alebtong road.

“It is claimed that two motorcycles, UGD 759C TVS in black and UFD 732Z CT in blue, were travelling in the same direction from Lira to Alebtong at a close distance.

Both riders fell and were injured: Ogwal Motty was taken to a nearby clinic, while Rtd Major Olir Charles, 63, was taken to Lira Regional Referral Hospital for treatment but was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Both motorcycles were taken to Lira-City CPS pending an IOV inspection, according to SP Okema, who also stated that police traffic had visited the site.

Road crash data in Uganda continues to be concerning, with deaths reported on a daily basis. For example, in July 2024, the Uganda Police Force reported 35 motorbike deaths between 7 and 13 July.

Overall, 81 people died during this time, and 301 were injured.
