Serere, again: Police investigate another murder by strangulation

Serere | The Serere district Central Police Station has launched an investigation into the alleged murder of Betty Ayango.

A 45-year-old peasant farmer known as Movit lived in Akudumu Cell, Osuguro Ward, Serere town council, Serere district, until she was strangled.

The incident took place on the night of July 26-27, 2024, at an unknown time in Serere township ward, Serere town council, Serere.

Emelu Mathew, 45, filed the report at CPS Serere under case number CRB 370/2024. Emelu, the crime reporter, serves as the LC1 chairperson for the Serere township cell in Kakus ward.

It is alleged that on July 26, 2024, around 2:00 p.m., the couple went out to collect termites.

After returning, they roasted the termites before selling them at the trading centre.

They then went to Bamboo Bar in Upper Shops, where they drank until about 9:00 p.m.

As they were leaving, the husband claims they parted ways, with the wife deciding to return home.

She did not return, and her body was discovered the next morning, about 250 metres from their home.

The crime scene was examined, statements were taken, and two suspects were arrested to assist with the investigation. They are currently detained at Serere CPS.

The suspects are Olila Peter, 35, a resident of Akudumu Cell, Osuguro Ward, Serere Town Council (the deceased’s husband) and Engalu Alfred, 34, also of Akudumu Cell, Osuguro Ward, Serere Town Council.

According to ASP Edison Obukulem, Acting Police PRO for East Kyoga, the body was transported to Serere Health Centre IV for a postmortem examination.

Obukulem stated that investigations are ongoing and that further updates will be provided as new developments occur.

This is the second time in less than three weeks a murder by strangulation has been reported in Serere.
