Wisdom High School takes action to promote Leb Lango

Leb Lango

Kole | Associate Professor Opio Okaka Dokotum, Lira University’s Deputy Vice Chancellor in-charge of Academic Affairs, has urged young people studying in various senior secondary schools across Lango sub-region to love their mother tongue, Leb Lango.

Professor Okaka has also called on schools to make Leb Lango a compulsory subject.

He was speaking on Saturday, July 13, 2024, at a Wisdom High Secondary School function in Kole South, Kole.

More than 15 Senior Secondary Schools in Lango attended the event, which officially launched Leb Lango Day. Professor Okaka was the event’s chief guest.

“I am now encouraging students to value their culture because there are not many teachers in Leb Lango; let us preserve our culture like other tribes so that we do not forget our mother tongue,” the Chief Guest said.

Professor Dokotum, a long-time advocate for the Lango language, added, “Our Leb Lango is now crossing Karuma. I want to assure you that English is not our native language.”

Amborse Ogwal, the Executive Director of Wisdom High Senior Secondary School, requested assistance.

“Please let us support it next time. Organise it weather in Town College, anything, like a symposium, for the love, Wisdom will be the first school to reach and to show that we are not joking.

“Culture is the reason we exist; the only thing is that a cultural revolution is taking place, but we cannot detach ourselves,” Ogwal added.

He added, “We shall be late. I’m very grateful for the people who performed here. You are now making Leb Lango a practical subject.”

“I must confess: ‘I am the happiest person because I have learned a lot about Leb Lango that I did not know’.” “I am now a better person. Now show me something I’m very proud of.”

Meanwhile, Gloria Adero, a Leb Lango teacher at Comboni College in Lira City, stated that we are promoting our culture in Comboni.

“Because Leb Lango can give you more weight in passing other subjects. So, I’m now appealing to other students to value the impact of taking Leb Lango as their major subject..”

Rev. Martin Ocen Odyek, a teacher at Akalo Comprehensive Secondary School, urged students not to neglect the Lango language.

“I am sending messages to the head teachers to prevent Leb Lango from being taught by a teacher younger than 40 years old.”

Some parents are allegedly misadvising their children that the local language is not a significant subject for them, according to Okii Kenneth Okwir, a Leb Lango teacher at Wisdom High School.

Over 450 students at Wisdom High School are enrolled in Leb Lango at both the “O” and “A” levels. I want to encourage other students to engage in Lango activities in order to grow and enhance their capacity.

A 43-year-old student at Amugu Secondary School in Alebtong district stated that he decided to return and sit PLE with his daughter, and he received second grade.

“I’m sitting senior four this year. I want to be a Leb Lango teacher so that I can promote my culture and tribe’s origin.”

Wisdom High School, Agali Seeds Secondary in Lira district, Amugu Senior Secondary in Alebtong district, Comboni College in Lira City, Akalo Comprehensive Secondary School, and Akalo Senior Secondary School in Kole district were all present.
