Soroti| This year’s International Museums Day will be held in Soroti City, according to the Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife, and Antiquities’ Museums and Monuments Department.
The event will take place on Saturday, May 18, 2024.
The highly anticipated celebration of IMD2024, in which Uganda joins the rest of the world, will attract a number of local and national exhibitors who will come to showcase various art works.
The ICOM General Assembly in Moscow, Russia, passed a resolution declaring International Museum Day.
Its goal has been to create an annual event that will “unify the creative aspirations and efforts of museums and draw the attention of the global public to their activity.”
Some confirmed exhibitors include Soroti Regional Museum, Ateker Museum, Ebenezer Crafts Soroti, URA Museum (Taxation), Bantu Migration (Untold Quests pictorials), Vipawa Children’s Art Museum (children’s creatives/art), and UPPC Print Museum and Resource Centre.
The Uganda Police Museum – Kibuli, a centre dedicated to preserving Uganda’s policing heritage, the Institution of the Umukuuka (Bamasaaba cultural heritage), historical artefacts, and artisan craftsmanship will all be on display.
A museum serves several functions, including collection, exhibition, conservation, research, and education. Museums collect artefacts and documents for display and research.
They hold temporary and permanent exhibitions to educate the public about culture, art, science, and other topics.
This year’s celebration promises to be an enlightening and inspiring event, with the theme “Museums shaping knowledge for the future,” which is based on the International Council of Museums’ (ICOM) international theme “Museums for Education and Research.”
The Vice President of Uganda, Maj. (rtd) Jessica Alupo, is expected to attend as the chief guest.
A number of week-long activities have been planned prior to the Day. Starting May 15, exhibitions from exhibitors across the country will be held at the Soroti Regional Museum.
On May 16, a quiz, poetry, and fine art competition will begin at Soroti University, followed by town cleaning, tree planting during the day and a campfire at night, and town learning.
