Ministry of edu., UNEB seek over shs43b in 2024/5 budget for meals, examiners

Kampala | The Uganda National Examination Board (UNEB) is seeking an additional shs6.5 billion in its 2024/2025 budget.

They claim that the money will cover the cost of five meals per day, as well as utilities and basic health services for examiners and checkers during examination marking.

Only shs10.2 billion was allocated in the 2024/2025 budget, but UNEB believes it will be insufficient. In total, they require shs16.7 billion.

Furthermore, UNEB requires an additional shs4.6b to increase marking fees for their examiners.

The Parliamentary Committee on Education’s report noted that the fees paid to examiners are low in comparison to the demands of their work.

“Currently, the board is facing the challenge of determining the appropriate number of examiners, as many consider the current marking rate to be inadequate,” according to a section of the committee report.

The Ministry of Education, like UNEB, wants an additional shs30.2b.

This will allow for the smooth takeover of 100 secondary schools founded by communities and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) whose owners lack the funds to manage them.

The ministry also requires an additional shs6.4 billion to support 100 primary schools.

The Parliamentary Committee on Education was informed that the ministry has received requests to take over schools across the country, with each secondary school costing shs300 million.

Meanwhile, each primary school requires shs64 million, with a total budget of 36.3 billion.

The ministry’s national budget for 2024/2025 does not include these funds.
