Authorities of Alebtong district are considering imposing a ban on the movement of livestock in and out of Ajuri county over the outbreak of deadly foot and mouth disease in the area.
On Wednesday, March 15, 2023, a team from the Production and Marketing Committee in the district visited areas of Adwir parish and Alololo in Adwir sub-county and found that there was an outbreak of the disease.
The team was led by the district chairperson DK Odongo who told Radio QFM (TND News’ media partner) that the most affected parishes in Adwir sub-county are Olwero, Ocokober, Alolololo, and Adwir.
Odongo also said the Committee of Production found that it is necessary to temporarily halt the sale of cows at the Adwir auction (market) starting Friday, March 17, 2023.
Dr. Noki Charles is the District Veterinary Officer of Alebtong. He confirmed the outbreak of foot and mouth disease in Adwir and Angetta sub-counties.
Dr. Noki said he has written to the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Fisheries requesting the vaccinations of cattle in Ajuri County.
He explains that they have also asked the Ministry to consider imposing a ban on the sale and movement of cattle in the entire Ajuri County.
According to him, communities can use symptomatic treatment by mixing salts to treat their cows.
He confirms that over 1000 cows are already affected in Adwir, Angetta, and other sub-counties
