Otuke – February 12, 2022: Investigators from Otuke Central Police Station are investigating the sudden death of Omony Daniel, 15. The deceased is a son to Odongo Bosco, 55. Both are residents of Alingiri village, Adwari sub-county in Otuke.
His departed son was a primary three pupil of Ader primary school in Adwari sub-county, same district.
Preliminary reports indicate that on February 11, 2022, at around 9:30 am after his class teacher Okello Tonny was taking pupils for Physical Education (PE) within the school compound Omony collapsed and became unconscious.
In an exclusive interview with the school headteacher Alfred Meri, he said when the class teacher was giving instructions to pupils to go for PE, he (headteacher) was teaching P2 pupils.
The two classes are in the same block, he narrated.
Within a short while, he said his deputy came and notified him that a pupil had collapsed. “I left the class and found teachers who were present trying to give first aid under the shade, immediately he rang the parents while the school was quickly arranging to rush the boy to the health facility.”
“But, unfortunately, he passed on.”
The headteacher added that, then, immediately he called and informed the LC3 chairperson, the LC5 chairperson, District Education Officer, and the RDC.
According to Meri, the boy has been absent from school for the entire [last] week, revealing that his parents never communicated.
Asked whether the child had some complications that were earlier noted, he answered, “The parents never mentioned any health-related problem about the child, it’s only after this incident when the father said the boy missed school last week because he was having a headache.”
“I can confirm he has some rashes on his head,” Meri told TND News Acipa Doreen on the phone who added, “According to the boy’s father, the kid once fell sick and became ‘somehow halfway paralyzed’ after recovering.”
Police officers (detectives) under the command of DPC Otuke visited the scene and recorded statements from the teachers present.
The deceased’s body was handed over to Orum Health center IV for postmortem.
Francis Abola is the Otuke LC5 chairperson. He has advised parents to always inform schools about their children’s health and related issues.
Abola added, “It’s important to disclose children’s complications to the school authorities for better management and monitoring them while at school.”
Christopher Omara is the Otuke RDC. “The postmortem shall bring out the result,” he said.
ASP Jimmy Patrick Okema, North Kyoga Regional Police spokesperson said the unfortunate notification reached his desk. “The police are making more inquiries to the case while we await the postmortem result.”
He told us that the police still need to hear some details from the parents of the deceased.
