40km Nabingola-Kasule-Hapuuyo-Kakabara road done shoddily – Nabbanja

Kyegegwa – 19, September 2021: In 2019, the Inspectorate of Vehicles in the Ministry of Works and Transport said Uganda roads are the worst in the whole of East Africa in terms of road accidents.

At least 3,500 people get killed annually due to accidents from our roads.

As quoted by Daily Monitor in 2019, Winstone Katushabe who is the chief licensing officer of motor vehicles, they are aware of most issues raised and they act on it by following up with responsible agencies.

The 2018 United Nations (UN) Economic Commission for Africa Road Safety Performance report indicated that the Pearl of Africa’s roads is the worst in East Africa.

Additionally, the report revealed that 10 people die daily in Uganda due to bad roads.

Uganda government is trying to work on this by improving on the current road infrastructure, and police traffic department have been equipped to enforce road safety guidelines.

With more roads being worked on across the country, many are not meeting value for money expectations. This has been disclosed by the Prime Minister, Robina Nabbanja.

“After a field visit in Kyegegwa District, I have directed an immediate investigation and possible punitive action unto contractors and the District leadership for the apparent shoddy works on the 40km Nabingola-Kasule-Hapuuyo-Kakabara Road,” she expressed dissatisfaction.

She added that work done on this government of Uganda funded Kyegegwa road is not commensurate to the 1.8bn contract sum.

“We must always ensure that there is value for money in all projects undertaken, such unpatriotic contractors must be denied contracts,” she adds.

In Lango subregion, the Lira-Kamdini potholed highway has killed more than three people in recent months.

The Members of Parliament from the subregion a fortnight ago met with UNRA leadership and discussed poor roads infrastructures in the subregion.
