Soroti: Fresh battle on Achuna health centre III erupts

Soroti—6, September 2021: Fresh battle on Achuna health center III has erupted after Tubur Sub-county council decided to relocate the health unit from Achuna Sub-county to Alongu parish in Soroti district.
This comes barely two weeks after a successful resolution after a dispute between the community and a one Lule over a proposed site [land].
The Soroti RDC, Patrick Okumu, brokered the meeting to resolve the impasse.
The move by the Sub-county authorities angered the locals, prompting them to petition the council’s decision, which they say is contrary to the district approved plan.
Soroti district local government approved the health center III construction in Achuna and it is to cost shs465 million.
A team of local council leaders marched to the Office of the Resident District Commissioner and Chief Administrative Officer Soroti to deliver the petition against the council’s decision.
Christine Akello, the Deputy Speaker Tubur Sub-county, says they convened an emergency council on Tuesday 31 August with an agenda to discuss the relocation of the health centre.
Disagreements ensued in the council, and the matter ended up for voting, she adds.
She also says illegalities from “invisible hands” marred the election [voting] in the council.
The RDC Soroti, Okumu, acknowledged recipient of the petition and vowed to handle the matter amicably.
“The move is political, and it’s aimed at affecting service delivery and faulting the government for not performing,” he added.
