Kampala—19, December 2020: The 2nd Deputy Prime Minister Kirunda Kivejinja has died. He died on Saturday from Mulago National Hospital in Kampala, where he was admitted for weeks.

The former Minister of East African Community Affairs until his death was the Minister without portfolio in Museveni’s government.

He succumbed to Covid-19 related complications on Saturday, according to Daily Monitor. The publication quoted his son, Fauk Kirunda.

“It’s true, he is dead. He passed away at Mulago National referral Hospital,” he told Daily Monitor.

The deceased had tested positive for Covid-19, although he had underlying diseases like diabetes.

“His relatives said he was rushed to hospital when his health conditions deteriorated due to malaria.”

“It’s true he’s passed away at Mulago hospital and that is where his body is still lying as I speak now. Since he’s a politician and big public figure, we as the family are waiting on government as we can’t guarantee that the body will be in our hands,” family member, Mr Ismail Nunguli said, as reported by Daily Monitor.

He died at 85.

In less than a week, Covid-19 has killed more than five politicians in Uganda, including MPs. In total, Uganda’s coronavirus infections are now 30,071 cases and 230 deaths.
