Kampala – 3 November 2020: The Democratic Party (DP) president is among duly nominated presidential candidates vying for president of Uganda in the forthcoming general elections in 2021.
Mr Mao joins General Yoweri T. Kaguta Museveni, Lt. Gen. Henry Tumukunde, Maj. Gen. Mugisha Muntu Greg all of whom were nominated on Monday by electoral commission (EC) chairman, Justice Simon Byabakama Mugenyi.
Other candidates nominated on day two, alongside DP Mao are: FDC Amuriat Patrick Oboi, Independent candidates John Katumba, Nancy Kalembe, Joseph Kabuleta, NUP presidential flag bearer Ssentamu Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine and independent candidate Fred Mwesigye.
Speaking to media shortly after his nomination, Mr Mao promised equal distribution of government resources to benefit all Ugandans.
He called for national unity and reconciliation from all Ugandans.
“Once elected president, i will set up what we will called the “Stolen Assets Recovery Tribunal” and will be managed by experienced Judges.
This he says will help to reclaim the public and private property that has been taken over illegally and sold by current regime.
Vocal opposition leader further says like DP, his regime will believe in constitutionalism and rule of law when entrusted with top leadership.
On his delayed and unexpected nomination, he clarified: “We delayed because we are not a jua-kali party.”
“We had to follow our party constitution; had a delayed delegates conference due to Covid-19. We are not like other parties that went for sole candidates. For us we had to hold a delegates conference to elect a presidential party flag bearer.”
On taking power, he said DP doesn’t have blood on its hands, adding: “I don’t want to jump over bodies when going to be sworn in as your next president.”
According to candidate Mao, his candidature is based on “reclaiming our future from those who have stolen it”.
He then promised, through a tribunal he will ensure all stolen cattle and other property are reclaimed.
