Boat accident: IUEA says Alwi Hassan Sr, Alwi Hassan Jr all alive

Kampala—31, August 2020: “It’s with the deepest sadness and regret to inform the public of the tragedy that has befallen the IUEA family….,” reads the statement issued by the International University of East Africa on Monday.

It adds: “With God’s grace, Mr Alwi Hassan (Senior), one of the Directors of IUEA and affectionately known as “Chairman’ has survived this horrible accident and is fine. Investigations are ongoing into the accident. Mr Hassan Alwi (Junior) the Resident Director of IUEA is alive and well and was not involved in the accident.”

“The entire IUEA family would like to extend our deepest condolences to the proprietors of IUEA family at this difficult time. We also thank the general public for the outpouring of support for the Alwi and IUEA families.”

On Sunday evening, a water accident was reported of the Alwi family on River Nile, Jinja.

Police statement shows that Hassan Alwi’s wife, Super Shakirah and one of their daughters Amirror Alwi drowned when their boat experienced engine failure and sailed through spillways of River Nile.

The report of the accident was first issued by Eskom Uganda Ltd. Eskom’s Sunday press statement revealed that the boat Alwi’s family was using engine failure on River Nile, sailing towards high pressured spillways.

The statement further read that in an attempt to rescue the family, a lone boat followed but was also hit by the spillways. It had one person on-board.

Soon, the Police issued a statement reading: “At around 17:30hrs security manager Eskom called Nalufenya police on phone reporting drowning of people at Kiira dam, this was even registered under SD REF 09/30/08/2020.This involved two boats one which had four people namely Hassan Alwi,(father), Shakira Super (mother), Alwi Amirror (child), Jafalu Alwi (child), Okidi Patrick (staff) and the second boat had one person not yet identified who had come to rescue the first boat which had experienced an engine failure.”

The statement adds: “Upon receipt of information, a team police officers from Nalufenya police station led by OC station, OC CID, Nalufenya medical team, together with Police marine responded to the scene and managed to rescue and saved two lives from the water which had reached Kiira dam Tabines.”
