Mysterious bush fire has for the second time in less than six months visited Atiak sugarcane plantation in Atiak sub-county, Amuru district.
The Monday incident started at around 2:30pm, police says.
The case, of “setting fire on sugarcane plantation” was registered at Atiak police post under CRB: 18/2019 as search for suspects and cause continue.
Jimmy Patrick Okema, the Aswa regional police Spokesperson confirmed the incident, saying: “Police in Amuru in collaboration with Atiak police post visited the scene, photographs taken, sketch map drawn and attached to the case file.”
“A drone was introduced, and images captured and it established that this was wild bush fire that entered the sugar plantation,” Okema added.
However, both police and Horyal management could not tell the number of hectares got destroyed by press time.
On 26, November, 2018, 250 acres was destroyed by wildfire in what police suspected to have been executed by locals aggrieved with company existence in the area.
Okema told our reporter then that the disaster could have also occurred due to search for wild animals by hunters who during dry season carry out bush burning.
Atiak Sugar Factory Limited or Horyal Sugar Factory (Atiak) is a Greenfield sugar project promoted by Horyal Investment Holding Company Limited whose owner, Amina Moghe Hersi is a Kenyan.
