Twelve youth groups in Mbale Municipality are set to receive Youth Livelihood Program (YLP) funds, four years after they were banned from touching it.
The shs125m is expected to boost different youth projects approved by Municipal authorities in fiscal year 2018/2019.
The twelve youth groups are undertaking enterprises like piggery, poultry, metal works and fabrication, among others.
Angela Neumbe, the Mbale Municipality Community Development Officer (CDO) told TND News that the money will be given on Monday.
In ensuring that the beneficiary groups are genuine, Neumbe said Local Council One chairpersons of areas the projects sit witnessed.
“Each youth group will get shs5 million for a start with possible add up later,” Neumbe told this news website.
According to Neumbe, government banned Mbale Municipal youth groups for four years after most members were found to be ghosts.
The ban also follows poor loan payback. In the commencing fiscal year of 2014/2015, out of millions disbursed, official say youth repaid only shs19m.
This according to her has made municipal authorities to disburse money in phases to avoid repeat of past error.
In fiscal year 2013/2014, government through Ministry of Gender, Labor and Social Development introduced Youth Livelihood Program with hopes of ending unemployment among Ugandan youth.
However, the program faced numerous challenges like failure to pay back the money (loan) to government pool, fake youth groups and long bureaucracy .
