Fourteen passengers travelling to Gulu City died on the spot following a fatal night crash on Tuesday.
The crash occurred on July 7 at around 09:34 pm at Bobi trading centre, on the Kampala–Gulu highway.
SP Kananura Michael, PRO of traffic and road safety at the Uganda Police Force, said in a statement on Wednesday that the crash involved motor vehicle UBE 110H, an Isuzu bus belonging to OPIT Travellers Company and motor vehicle KBS 564D/ZE 7948, a Mercedes-Benz Actros trailer.
Preliminary reports indicate that the driver of the bus, who was allegedly speeding, attempted to avoid a pedestrian crossing the road.
The driver lost control of the vehicle and collided head-on with the oncoming trailer, SP Kananura added.
He confirmed the death of 14 people while twenty-eight others sustained injuries. The injured victims were rushed to various medical facilities in Gulu City for treatment.
The police, through SP Kananura, urged all motorists to strictly observe speed limits, especially at night when visibility is reduced.
Drivers, he said, are also reminded to remain vigilant, anticipate pedestrian movement in trading centres and always drive at speeds that allow them to stop safely.
On Wednesday, Gulu City Council mayor Julius Acire Labeja and RCC Onoria briefed families affected by the Minakulu-Bobi crash.
The two leaders urged families to remain calm as identification and body release procedures continue with dignity and accountability.
Ugandan roads continue to kill users, with daily fatalities at more than 13, according to the police annual report.
