Lira Regional Referral Hospital issued a statement on Monday revealing that on Saturday, June 6, 2026, its Medical Emergency Team received a report of a suspected Ebola Disease (EBOD).
The patient, male boda boda rider aged 42, presented with symptoms commonly associated with Ebola, including haematemesis (vomiting blood), fever, severe headache, and general body weakness.
In line with national Ebola response protocols, the patient was safely evacuated and admitted to the hospital’s isolation unit, where comprehensive investigations were conducted under strict infection prevention and control measures.
Laboratory results received on Monday confirmed that the patient tested negative for Ebola.
Unfortunately, despite the medical interventions he was accorded, the patient succumbed to his underlying medical condition.
Further clinical assessment established liver failure as the primary cause of his illness and the symptoms he exhibited – leading to his death.
The Hospital Director, Dr. Andrew Odur, noted that since the declaration of the Ebola outbreak in the country, the hospital has strengthened its preparedness and response mechanisms to effectively manage and investigate all suspected cases.
Dr. Odur urged members of the public to remain vigilant, familiarise themselves with the signs and symptoms of Ebola Virus Disease, and continue adhering to all recommended public health guidelines and standard operating procedures.
Dr Odur also called upon health workers to maintain a high level of vigilance when managing patients, further emphasising that any unusual symptoms or suspected cases should be promptly reported to the District Surveillance Team and the Regional Medical Emergency Operations Centre for timely support and intervention.
Uganda has intensified its Ebola surveillance and response mechanisms, which have helped contain the spread of the deadly viral disease.
On Monday, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni met with the World Health Organization Director (WHO) Director General, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, at State House, Entebbe.
Museveni said they discussed the Ebola outbreak in the region and the measures needed to strengthen prevention and response efforts.
At the meeting, Museveni stressed the importance of community awareness, early detection, and cross-border collaboration.
“Uganda has experience in mobilising communities to confront public health challenges, as we did during the fight against HIV/AIDS,” he told the WHO boss and his delegation.
