As President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni is expected to visit Lango on April 18, 2026, some leaders across the Lango sub-region have woken up and raised the alarm.
They claim that some of the members appointed to organise the president’s program do not hold any NRM leadership position, from the village level, parish, sub-county, up to the district level.
They further argue that this is not right, adding that even the name of the host City NRM chairperson does not appear on the list. “We are not going to tolerate this, and the central organising team must reject that list,” they said.
Addressing journalists on Thursday, April 9, 2026, at Lira Valley Resort, Jacob Ocen, the NRM spokesperson for Lira City, condemned the motive behind the list that the organisers have come up with. He said the organisers selected names without consulting the higher NRM authorities across the region.
“For that matter, we are not going to sit back and watch this masquerade. As NRM leaders in Lango, we shall demonstrate this so that only those who fought for President Museveni’s campaign meet with the president, not a selective group of people. We condemn this act,” Ocen stated.
Ocen further condemned the move and said those at the forefront of organising the president’s visit are people who did not bring any victory. Unfortunately, they were against the NRM party during the recent general election, yet Lango contributed greatly to ensuring that President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni retained his seat.
“I am calling upon all NRM leaders across the Lango sub-region to come and join us in the demonstration that will take place before the president’s visit. We are tired of some people in Lango who are jealous of their colleagues,” he said.
Ocen cited some of the names that the organisers have listed ahead of the president’s visit, including Odongo DK, the UPC District Chairperson for Alebtong; Kwania District Woman Member Kenny Auma, also of the UPC; and others including Dr Robert Olet Egwea, Dr Christopher Ebal, Dr Rehema Eton, Dr Ambrose Agona, Dr Easter Akullu, Prof. Will Okullo together with his wife, and Amb. Joseph Ocwet, among others.
According to Eddy Okwir, NRM spokesperson for Otuke District, it is sad to hear that some sectors left out many names of people who did a lot of mobilisation for President Museveni during the general election.
“As leaders, we reject this list and we condemn it,” Okwir said.
Okwir added that to make matters worse, those who were against the NRM party during the recent election are the very people on the list to meet the president.
“As leaders of NRM, we shall not allow this to happen. Although the president is for everyone, the procedure used by the organisers to select names is wrong,” he added.
Meanwhile, Bosco Onyik, Oyam District NRM Chairperson, said that as top NRM leaders across the district, they have not received any communication or invitation related to the coming of President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for them to come and welcome him and celebrate the victory.
He added that the program should be for everyone, not just a few people.
Another NRM cadre, Walter Abura who also doubles as the Assistant District Election Officer for Lira City, lamented that in the recently concluded election, the process was led by the secretariat, not by respectable people.
Therefore, the rightful people to organise the victory celebration should be the top NRM officials and the party structure.
Ignoring the NRM party structure from different sectors such as district, division, sub-county, and parish is not right and will not work.
“We reject the list,” he said. He also advocated for all NRM leaders to wake up and condemned the move by the Lango cultural institution over the NRM matter.
Several Leaders whose names are listed have spoken to our reporter. Emeritus Bishop John Charles Odur Kami stated that the committee neither contacted him nor invited him to any meetings concerning the arrival of the President of Uganda.
Bishop Kami also criticised the role assigned to him within the committee, questioning how they could designate him as the master of ceremonies.
In the meantime, Alebtong LC5, DK Odongo, also expressed his concerns, stating that the committee did not consult him regarding the position he was to hold.
Therefore, I am unaware that the committee entrusted me with the publicity role. I regret to inform you that I was not notified.
