As climate change continues to remain a global challenge, the Good Forests Foundation Uganda (GFFU) is partnering with local farmers in Uganda to restore green and conducive environment for both humans and wildlife.
The partnership aims to promote tree planting in areas with massive tree destruction.
GFFU is a locally registered NGO in Uganda and has been operating since August 2025.
It operates under the Global Fair Ventures, an NGO based in Germany.
While planting bunch of trees within Bulyangu village in Hoima, Collin Mugabi, a project manager at the organisation, said that tree planting initiative lies within their mission and objectives of restoring and regreening degraded areas and also mitigate climate change.
This time, he said, the organisation joins hands with the world to celebrate International Forests Day on March 21.
The day will be commemorated under the theme: “Forests and Economys.”
Mugabi noted the importance of forests comprised of trees with a couple of natural products including wild honey, and timber.
In accordance with the this year’s theme, he noted that trees through forests contribute upto about 8 percent of the GDP through local tourism and others, an effect which calls for interventions.
“To this course, we have so far planted close to 100,000 tree seedling in Hoima, over 250,000 across Bunyoro sub-region and over 2m seedlings across the country. All these trees are planted in partnership with 6,500 local farmers,” Mugabi disclosed.
He said that they identify, train farmers before providing them with tree seedlings but also cater for the maintenance of all the planted trees.
“And we believe that if a farmer plant at least an acre of trees, he will be able expand his income by atleast shs5 million,” he noted.
Currently, he said they are working in 22 districts where 350 youths are employed, thus reducing on unemployment.
“As an organisation, we pledge to continue partnership with the government in restoring the degraded environment.”
Stuart Tusabege, the hoima district forest officer applauded the organisation for the initiative, saying that it will help in restoring the degraded ecosystems and bring back to life the lost conducive depleted vegetation.
Francis Abitegaka Kiva, the president of Lions Club Hoima, called for cohesive team work to rise environmental conservation, committing that as Lions Club, they are ready to work together with different partners.
Rymond Mugume, the Hoima Kitara Rotary Club President-elect, said that as a club, under ‘green wave movement’ they will ensure community sensitisation on environmental protection and conservation.
Faridah Kabanyoro, the LC1 of Bulyangu Central, appreciated Good Forests Foundation Uganda for their tree-planting initiative, noting that it will help in regreening the destroyed environment covers.
Sharf Ntuyo, deputy Resident District Commissioner (DRDC) of Hoima, called for the need to have a cohesive mass sensitisation on the values and importance of forests.
He called upon all the government leaders including politicians and security to participate in community sensitisation.
