Amolatar district is currently battling a measles outbreak with health authorities calling for an emergency vaccination campaign.
The vaccination will target all children under the age of five.
Dr. Jimmy Odongo, the District Health Officer (DHO), confirmed that last week, samples from eight suspected cases were sent to Entebbe. They all tested positive for measles.
He identified Muntu sub-county as the primary hotspot for this outbreak, with cases also being recorded in several other areas, including Arwotcek, Opali, Agikadak, and Etam town council.
Dr. Odongo has urged the public to remain vigilant, especially those in schools and public institutions, as the outbreak affects both children and adults.
He emphasised the importance of managing the disease properly, highlighting that many individuals believe in traditional methods of treatment.
However, he strongly urged that anyone showing symptoms should inform hospital authorities promptly, allowing for proper isolation to prevent further spread of the virus.
Dr. Odongo also reminded the community of essential preventative measures, such as wearing face masks, practicing regular hand washing, and maintaining social distance.
He cautioned clinics against admitting or treating any individuals suspected of having the disease, as there is no effective cure for the virus.
Instead, clinic management should notify hospitals, allowing trained professionals to handle the situation appropriately.
