SP Michael Kananura, spokesperson for the Traffic Directorate, shared encouraging news following the festive season of 2025.
For the first time in years, Uganda experienced a significant reduction in road accidents during the busy holiday period, a development he attributed to the collective efforts of government agencies, local authorities, and community organizations.
This marked a sharp contrast to previous years when the festive season was often plagued by high crash rates.
According to Kananura, the improvements were clear, with the 2025 festive period reporting fewer accidents compared to both 2024 and 2023. This continues a promising trend seen over the last two years, signaling that Uganda’s commitment to road safety is beginning to yield tangible results.
For the first time, Ugandans are witnessing a shift toward safer driving practices, a trend that Kananura hopes will be sustainable throughout the year.
The decrease in accidents can be attributed to several key initiatives, including the #ArriveAlive campaign and heightened public awareness about safe driving. These programs, supported by law enforcement and various stakeholders, were instrumental in shifting attitudes about road safety.
Kananura emphasized that road safety is not just a government initiative but a shared responsibility among all road users. “We owe this success to the tireless efforts of every individual involved in making our roads safer.
From the law enforcement agencies to the citizens who adhered to traffic rules, everyone played a part,” Kananura stated.
He also highlighted that, while the reduction in crashes is a positive sign, it is crucial not to become complacent, as road safety requires constant vigilance. The efforts to raise awareness through various media outlets, road safety education in schools, and targeted campaigns have made a noticeable impact.
These campaigns reached diverse groups, educating them about the importance of seat belts, speed limits, and staying sober behind the wheel. The success of these initiatives was further reinforced by the strategic enforcement of traffic laws during high-risk periods, especially during the busy holiday season.
Despite the positive strides, Kananura reminded the public that the ongoing political campaigns and other activities could serve as distractions, making some road users less mindful of safety precautions.
He urged Ugandans to maintain their focus and vigilance on the roads, particularly as the country enters a new year filled with various events and celebrations.
“As we move forward, we must continue to prioritize safety over convenience. Each life saved is a victory, and our goal is to make Uganda’s roads among the safest in Africa,” he remarked.
