Dr Aceng: “Amongi’s NRM leadership allegations are “cheap and baseless”

Each day, the politics of Lira City continues to grow with propaganda and misinformation among candidates and their supporters, including political mercenaries.

Since the entry of Betty Amongi Ongom into the politics of Lira City, her rival and those who do not believe in her politics have accused her of promoting hatred, propaganda through her political mercenaries, supporters and agents.

Amongi’s camp, and herself personally, have repeatedly also claimed that Dr Aceng’s “politics are bad, and that she has messed up the city” since she was elected four years ago.

Her claims, most of them branded as “misinformation and propaganda”, have been refuted by Dr Aceng, the incumbent MP for Lira City.

Dr Aceng has dismissed claims made by Amongi that she has fired over 80% of NRM chairpersons within Lira City.

On November 17, 2025, while appearing on NBS TV, Amongi claimed that Aceng has caused significant disunity within the NRM party in the City by firing over 80% of the party leaders.

However, in a press statement read by George Okot, a senior NRM cadre, Aceng described the allegations as “baseless, cheap, and unfounded” with an intention to undermine party unity and split the party ahead of the 2026 general elections.

Dr Aceng, who is also the chairperson of NRM Lira City, emphasised that NRM is a party guided by law, citing the fourth schedule of the party constitution, which states that the code of conduct applies to all party members and that all members shall subscribe to it.

She challenged Amongi to provide evidence of the fired leaders, questioning the credibility of the claims. “I don’t remember a day when I constituted a disciplinary committee to fire anybody,” Aceng said.

“This is a statement that makes people lose trust in the party. If she has proof of those I have chased, let her come out with the list.”

The woman MP highlighted the party’s commitment to courage, sanity, and kindness during challenging times, stating that challenges are not hurdles created to bring them down but opportunities to demonstrate their values to the population and voters.

David Sabiti, chairperson of NRM for Adidigweno A, Boke ward, Lira City West, wondered how Amongi could make such a statement, which is contrary to what is happening on the ground.

Sabiti emphasised that as NRM leaders, their focus is currently on mobilising votes for their candidates, and nothing will water down their efforts in winning the upcoming elections.

Innocent Ogweng, a party mobiliser, supports Aceng. “It’s always great to stand in support of truth, fairness, and humanity.”

He added that whoever wants votes should come with a clear agenda and achievements, adding that Minister Amongi has failed to show up for her constituents for over two decades.
