DP’s Josephine Etit leaves Oyam WMP race, endorses NRM’s Jane Acilo: “That’s maturity”

Etit Josephine Alice Oyang, the DP flagbearer for Oyam district woman MP has stepped down from the three-way race, leaving the contest between UPC’s Santa Alum Ogwang and NRM’s Jane Frances Acilo.

The announcement was made during a massive campaign trail of Jane Frances Acilo on Monday at Akucawitim Primary School in Okomo parish, Ngai sub-county, Oyam.

Etit said she stepped down from the race after understanding that Jane Frances Acilo is widely recognised across the district. She added that the people of Oyam desire a leader who is ready to change their status, acknowledging that Acilo has that quality.

The DP candidate called upon her supporters to rally behind Acilo, whom she reiterated has a prosperous vision and development plans for Oyam district.

“We are here to tell you that development has come to Oyam after 15 years of deplorable problems.” “Do you agree you have been in problems?” Etit asked the crowds. “We agree, we agree,” they replied in unison.

“Next year, we will try to eliminate emergency issues in Oyam,” she promised. “I come from Loro Adyeda. The people of Loro, Oyam South asked me to tell you that all of them will vote for Jane Frances Acilo.”

“We want change, we want change. Let’s wait to witness a new change and leadership in the coming five years and compare it with the last 15 years.

“Come next year on January 15, 2026, let’s rally behind Jane Frances Acilo,” Etit emphasised.

Speaking immediately after Etit announced support for her, Jane appreciated her for the vision. She noted that politics, especially during election campaigns, harbours a lot of hate speech and propaganda that tend to create divisions among the electorate.

She appreciated the electorate of Ngai for the support during party primaries and called for massive support ahead of the 2026 general elections.

She noted that politics should not divide people but instead bring them together to foster development.

“Don’t create divisions during the election process. We have been campaigning with love,” she said.

Acilo said that as she campaigns, her vision and agenda are in wealth creation and development, an aspect frequently echoed by the party’s national chairperson and President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.

“I have never gone to campaign trail rallies claiming to give money, and no one should lie to you. Rather, what I want to give is to teach you how to make money by giving you a fishing hook and not money,” she clarified on ongoing propaganda that she’s giving money to make people wealthy.

She explained that the fishing hook she has been talking about for wealth creation is supporting people with improved maize seeds, linking them to a better market for agricultural produce.

Her other agenda also aims to empower and elevate women, youth, elders and men, leaving no one behind.

She cautioned voters against propaganda, saying a good leader does not embrace division among the people but sacrifices to work for the electorate.

Eunice Omara of Okomo Parish, Ngai sub-county credited Etit for political maturity, saying endorsing Acilo is another victory.

Omara, 25, stated that after years of stagnation, Oyam is going to move forward. “I and the rest of us have got a role in this. Giving Acilo the mandate on January 15 will see Oyam forward. It’s been long without feeling about a better district.”

As of December 1, 2025, Oyam has a total of 395 polling stations, including an additional 60 created this year.
