Loro, Oyam | The NRM candidate for Oyam district, Woman Member of Parliament Jane Frances Acilo, has branded her campaign messages to meet the needs of the common people.
For more than six months, Acilo has mobilised the masses and has become part of their hope for a prosperous Oyam. At least every village across Oyam has households that have benefited from her maize seed donation.
She’s promising to do more and to take Oyam district up on the country’s map through proper representation and legislation, including community-driven initiatives.
On what she’s distinctively offering Oyam, she said: “I am giving you hooks, not fish.”
In Omolo trading centre, she told the crowds: “Some people say I don’t talk, but I am talking here. I am not an empty tin, I am a full tin,” she said to the excitement of the crowds.
She informed residents that it’s not significant to have a leader sho “talk too much and do not deliver for the people.”
On the issue of price for agricultural produce like maize grains, she said there is already a market. A kilogram, she said, would go for not less than shs1,000.
Relatedly, she has promised to support more households with maize seeds.
With no electricity poles in the better parts of Omolo trading centre and Odong primary school in Opele parish, Acilo agreed to ensure that the locals’ demand for power is considered.
She, however, told them that it would be better to bring wealth to their homes first and look at electricity connectivity.
Electricity, an essential commodity to a modern-day person, she told them, needs money to pay for a monthly power subscription.
“Try me for 5 years. If after 5 years I have not performed to your expectations, vote me out,” she said.
“I am standing for the masses, elect someone who will represent your interests,” she added.
What locals say
Akullu Mega of Aloc village, Opelere parish is a beneficiary of maize seeds distributed by Acilo. Mega reveals that she sold the maize grains, which have improved her household income.
Mega, like any other woman in Oyam, wants more from Acilo once elected in January 2026. She asked Acilo to lobby for the rehabilitation of roads.
Akello Miriam is a resident of Iwari village, Opelere parish. She spoke of her admiration for Acilo and why she will vote for her. “There are things she has started doing even before going to parliament. She gave me maize seeds which I have harvested. I was able to pay school fees for my children this third term because of her maize.
Akello believes that Acilo will lobby for the upgrade of Adigo Health Centre II to III to improve health services.
Like Mega and Akello, Akao Scovia of Aloc village, Opelere parish, is ready to trust Acilo with her vote.
Akao, a food vendor in Opelere, says women are suffering because of “self-centred leaders.”
“This time we are awake, and will send Acilo to Parliament to bring us services and to be able to support our local businesses.”
She identified poor road networks, lack of classrooms, lack of clean water sources, and low status of Adigo health centre II as major problems.
Akullu Sharon, female councillor for Opelere parish to Loro sub-county council, says Acilo has come to bring about change in Oyam.
The local political leader is pleased with an announcement by Jane that a kilogram of maize grains from rural farmers in the district will be bought at not less than shs1,000.
According to Akullu, Oyam has suffered for 25 years. “This time, we can’t accept it.”
‘An experienced caller’
From Monday, when the official campaign started, former Oyam district woman MP, Beatrice Amongi Lagada, has been rallying the people to trust Acilo with their votes.
The former legislator said in Oyam North and South on Tuesday that Acilo is a development-oriented lady, who will transform Oyam and better the lives of the people.
She urged the gathering to discard the spiralling propaganda going round that Acilo will leave Oyam once elected.
Lagada made it clear that Acilo is a resident of Myene and Aleka sub-counties with huge investments in these areas for the development of the community.
“The future of Oyam is bright, and we will have to connect chains with chains for development to be realised,” Jane said on Tuesday while campaigning in Gwok Wi Ikeo Chapel, Loro.
