Kole North MP Dr Opio lobbies for $600m World Bank-funded rural electrification project

The State Minister for Energy, Okaasai Opolot, has informed the residents of Kole North, Kole that their Member of Parliament, Dr Samuel Opio Acuti, has successfully lobbied for a $608 million for a nationwide rural electrification project funded by the Government of Uganda with support from the World Bank.

The Minister made the announcement during a public engagement in Kole district on Friday, where he confirmed the availability of funds following extensive surveys carried out in the constituency.

During a visit to the district substation—part of the Lira-Kole-Gulu-Karuma transmission line— Minister Opolot informed the media that the government secured the funding based on technical assessments.

“I am glad to report that our efforts have paid off, and $608 million has been obtained for rural electrification. This will help cover the surveyed areas within Kole North and other districts,” the Minister stated.

He further indicated that procurement processes are underway to acquire the necessary materials before the project rollout. Opolot commended Dr Opio Acuti for his close collaboration with the Ministry of Energy in ensuring that government programs such as rural electrification also reach the people of Kole North.

In his remarks, MP Opio noted that an electricity line is already under construction in parts of Kole North—including Apiioguru, Owani Adilo, and Akor Ward—using Government of Uganda funding.

However, he explained that additional financing from the World Bank was required to extend coverage to more areas.

Dr Opio pledged to continue advocating for improved social services, including upgraded health centers, roads, and schools, to meet the pressing needs of his constituents.

Local residents expressed appreciation for the development. Akoli Hellen, a 65-year-old from Okwero Sub-county, praised Dr Opio’s lobbying efforts, stating, “This is the kind of leader the people of Kole North need.”

She highlighted the expected benefits, including job creation for youth in trades such as salon operation and welding.

Jimmy Omara, 52, and a resident of Alito sub-county, also commended the MP’s performance over the past four years, citing numerous achievements realized under his leadership.

Boda boda riders Bosco Okello and Sam Aguma from Okwero-dot sub-county noted that the electrification project will improve their operations, especially during evening hours, and described Dr Opio as the most responsive MP since the constituency’s creation.

The project marks a significant milestone in improving energy access and stimulating local economic growth in the region.
