Padibe Primary School in Lamwo district has received a donation of desks, tables, and chairs worth millions of shillings from its former pupils as part of efforts to improve the learning environment for the children.
The support was spearheaded by Dr John Bosco Oryem, together with his friends, who said the gesture was aimed at reducing the burden the school is currently facing in regard to inadequate furniture.
“This donation is our way of giving back to the school that laid the foundation for our success. We want the current learners to study in a better environment than we did,” Dr Oryem said while handing over the items.
The head teacher of Padibe Primary School, Oling Jacob, warmly welcomed the contribution, saying it would go a long way in addressing the critical shortage of desks.
“This is a big relief to us because many of our pupils, especially those in P1 to P3, have been studying while seated on the floor. With this donation, pupils will now sit more comfortably, and this will motivate them to learn better,” Oling noted.
Padibe Primary School, which recently marked 100 years since its establishment, currently has a total enrollment of 778 pupils but with only seven functional classrooms.
The school has been struggling with limited infrastructure and furniture, a situation that has affected effective teaching and learning.
Parents and community members have also expressed gratitude to the old students for remembering their former school. They say the gesture is a great example of unity and responsibility in supporting education at the community level.
George Oweka, the Lamwo district sports officer who represented the district education department, welcomed the donation, saying that the donation is expected to ease congestion in classrooms and improve the learning conditions, especially for the lower primary pupils.
He asked the former pupils of the school to support the education department of Lamwo district with desks asking other people to also do the same.
