4 dead, 8 injured in Kole district fatal road crash

Four people have been confirmed dead on the spot and eight others seriously injured in a fatal road crash at around 8:30 am at Corner Park along the Lira-Kamdini highway on Tuesday.

According to reports, a Fuso lorry with Reg No UBP 253M, driven by a yet-to-be-identified person, was travelling from Kamdini towards Lira City. It was loaded with beans.

The lorry allegedly attempted to overtake a Datsun pickup, Reg No UAG 766L, carrying rice and occupants in the same direction.

Another vehicle approached from the opposite direction, forcing the Fuso driver to avoid a head-on collision, resulting in the lorry hitting the pickup from behind, overturning it, and killing four people while seriously injuring eight others.

SP Jimmy Patrick Okema, PRO of North Kyoga Region, said in an afternoon statement that the OC Traffic Kole district and other officers from the specialised unit visited the scenes.

Among the deceased were three unidentified male adults and one unidentified female adult. The eight seriously injured individuals, also unidentified, were quickly evacuated to Lira Referral Hospital for treatment.

Both vehicles have been taken to Kole Police Station pending inspection by the Inspector of Vehicles (IOV), and the deceased bodies were conveyed to the hospital mortuary, awaiting post-mortem examination.

“This is a very unfortunate incident. We advise drivers to observe all knowledge acquired while at driving school and respect road safety rules and regulations to avoid such carnage,” said SP Okema.

On Tuesday morning, report from the regional police PRO put the death toll at eight.
