Excitement and joy swept across Dokolo district on Monday as Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) members celebrated the dynamic victory of the current woman Member of Parliament, Sarah Aguti Nyangkori.
The MP achieved a milestone by winning the UPC party primaries.
The UPC conducted its primary elections nationwide on August 16, 2025, to select a strong flag bearer capable of challenging rival political parties like the NRM, FDC, and NUP in the upcoming general elections.
MP Aguti was declared the winner by the Dokolo UPC registrar, Haron Ocen, on Saturday at the UPC district office. She faced one opponent, Anna Okwir Bung, in the race to secure the party’s flag for the Dokolo Woman MP seat ahead of next year’s polls.
Aguti Nyangkori secured a resounding victory with 3,657 votes, while her opponent garnered only 422 votes. This win means she will carry the UPC flag into the general election, where she will compete against candidates from other political parties.
Ocen commended the peaceful conduct of the party delegates during the election process and urged them to maintain unity ahead of the general elections. “I want to make it clear that this election was free and fair, though some delegates did not participate,” he stated.
Aguti Nyangkori has proven her political strength before, having previously defeated candidates from the NRM, NUP, and FDC in the 2023 Dokolo woman MP by-election under the UPC ticket. That by-election followed the death of FDC’s Cecilia Atim Ogwal, who succumbed to cancer in India.
Upon her declaration at the weekend, MP Aguti expressed immense gratitude to the delegates who entrusted her with their votes. “This victory shows that my people still believe in me, and I urge them to maintain this trust in the general election.”
Nyangkori reassured her party members, “The flag is in safe hands. I am confident that just as we triumphed in the by-election, we will achieve an even greater victory in the upcoming general election.”
In her short time in Parliament, Aguti said she has made significant contributions, including procuring an ambulance, supporting community groups, and paying school fees for needy children, among other initiatives.
