A new headteacher has been appointed at Lira Town College, a government secondary school in the heart of the city.
The Ministry of Education and Sports assigned Levi Abongo to the College from Abia Seed Secondary School in the Alebtong District.
His appointment was officially confirmed on February 28, 2025, at a ceremony presided over by the Board of Governors, chaired by Lilian Ocari, in the school board room.
Abongo succeeds Joseph Okello, who has served as acting headteacher since Madam Rose Acen’s retirement on September 30, 2024.
The Board of Governors has expressed confidence in Abongo’s leadership abilities.

During the handover ceremony, City Education Officer Andrew Ogwang Oyang praised the Ministry of Education and Sports for the timely appointment. He emphasized the need for collaboration between the school and the city’s education department to maintain academic excellence.
“As the education department in the City, we value cooperation between schools and our office. We believe Mr. Abongo’s leadership will further strengthen Lira Town College’s position as a center of academic excellence,” Oyang stated.
Joseph Okello, who has now returned to his previous role as deputy headteacher, thanked the Board of Governors and school management for entrusting him with the responsibility of acting for more than five months.
“I assumed the office of headteacher on 30th February 2024, and I am proud of the progress we made during my tenure. I am confident that Mr. Abongo will build on this foundation and take the school to greater heights,” he remarked.
Abongo has expressed his dedication to upholding the school’s values and advancing its vision, thanking the Ministry of Education and Sports, the Board of Governors, and the school community for the opportunity to serve.
“I am honored to join Lira Town College and look forward to working with all stakeholders to ensure the school continues to excel academically and in all other aspects,” Abongo said.
The appointment has been widely welcomed by the school community, with high hopes for further growth and development under Abongo’s leadership.
Lillian Ocari, who also serves as Deputy City Clerk, emphasized that transfers are a normal part of public service, expressing pride in welcoming Abongo and thanking the deputy headteacher for his outstanding service.
“As the Board of Governors, we are very proud to welcome the newly appointed headteacher. I must also thank the outgoing headteacher, Mr. Joseph Okello, for lifting the name of the school during the five months he served,” she said.
During his brief tenure, Okello made significant improvements to the school’s reputation. Under his leadership, Lira Town College had a total enrollment of 1,390 students, with Senior Five students yet to arrive.
The students are divided into six groups: Senior One (176), Senior Two (203), Senior Three (317), Senior Four (372), and Senior Six (322).
The school also has a large teaching staff, with 77 government-aided teachers and an additional 17 teaching staff members.
Levi, who has over 31 years of experience in education as a teacher and school manager, has now expressed his gratitude to the Ministry of Education for allowing him to transfer to Lira Town College.
In his remarks, he described his journey through the educational system, which began at Dr. Obote College Borboro. He went on to work at Lango College in 2005 after excelling in the East Africa Examination.
He also worked at St. Catherine Secondary School Boroboro, where he was promoted to deputy headteacher, and later as headteacher at Abia Seed Secondary School in Alebtong district.
“My vision for this new station is to create an inclusive learning environment where every student can to hrive and achieve their full potential.”
